With record high unemployment, finding a new job can be really tough. As an employment professional, I hope to share with you some helpful advice.
First, put together a great resume. A job seeker with no resume is like a sales person with no business card.....it just makes everything harder. The last thing you need to do in a tight labor market is make things harder for a potential employer. So, take the time to put together a professional resume with a modern format, key information and no misspelled words.
Next, create an action plan. Start with a list of places you would like to work and think you have a realistic chance of placement with. Be sure to include companies that perform similar services to those that you have worked for in the past. Once your list is complete, get dressed up, plan your route and attempt to hand deliver your resume to each of these places. Personally, I think you can positive face to face interaction can help you. Still, while making your visits, inquire about job listings on Company websites too.
As part of your action plan, do some research on the staffing companies in your area....try to find out which Companies that they work with that are of interest to you. Then apply with each Staffing Company that you feel might work with employers that interest you. This usually requires an in person visit but will vary from agency to agency.
There are at least two more steps in a solid job search plan. First, make another list of people that you know and let them know you are looking. Networking can be an extremely effective tool and should not be overlooked. Contact your friends, your family, your hairdresser, your Pastor, anyone that knows you and might help.
Finally, take your job search to the internet. Search websites for all Companies of interest including staffing agencies. You also need to look at the major on line job boards like Monster, Career Builder, Yahoo, etc.
Set up email alerts that can come to your email any time new postings are listed that fit the criteria. This is a great way to stay updated about job openings that may work for you.
Above all, you must keep a positive attitude. Don't be tempted to let the news and other people get you down. A negative attitude is a huge waste of your time, talent and energy. Take control of your own career and your future and get out there and make something happen. I know you can do it!
